Climbing Lessons & Associations
Get Your Climbing Gear Out:
Associations, Clubs & Lessons For Climbing
|
|
Most instructors and schools are certified from the American
Mountain Guides Association. Though there are some excellent
guides and schools that aren't members of any association.
Ask for insurance, medical qualifications, land-use permits
for the areas used, client referrals, the guide's training
and experience, accident records, climbing gear provided and references from other
professionals.
There are plenty of great
male instructors. However, you may find a female is better
at understanding your climbing issues. This is a mind
sport and women approach the sport differently than men.
Good communication and trust are key. You might want to
try a few instructors until you find the right person
for the job.
Look for an instructor
that helps you solve problems. You need to rely on your
own skills to solve your problem. Good instructors will
give you ideas, not tell you the answer.
Some instructors might want to just show you the basics
and let you go at it. Your first climb can be exhausting
if you only use your arms to climb. You can easily get
discouraged and overwhelmed, feeling you lack the strength
to do this sport. Ask for some basic climbing skills to
begin with. It's not about strength as much as technique, balance,
and getting acquainted with the climbing gear.
Good climbing skills aren't
learned from a book. They're experienced. As in many sports
making mistakes is part of the learning process. Just
make sure you're safety skills are already learned and
practiced.
